If the stone is too damaged for our specialists to repair, at JG Carr Sandstone we also offer a stone replacement service. This may be required by structural or planning specifications or simply cosmetic. It’s also important to note that, sometimes, a stone replacement is more effective than a repair.
Whether it is a problem with your chimney or a crumbling stone in the masonry of your wall, this service can be slightly more costly. This is because it is crucial to replace the stone with a premium higher cost material to ensure better results. There are many stone compatible repair products that can make your replacement stone last for centuries.
Well-respected and noted in West Scotland
With 18 years of experience, we’ve built up quite a fantastic reputation that stretches to our stone replacement service. We understand that stone replacement is an extremely detail-oriented process but that doesn’t stop us. Using the original stone as a template, it is sized and profiled so that its replacement can be identical. We can then source a piece of stone which is as close to the original in texture and colour.
Once we have the necessary dimensions and the replacement stone in hand, the new stone is shaped. The stone is shaped to the exact size and shape of the faulty stone, or to its original dimensions, which might be necessary for the structure of the wider restoration.
The replacement stone will always be made from a product that will protect the host stone. The host stone is simply the older stone to which the new stone, or guest stone, will be introduced and fixed. Replacement stones will only be made from materials that are fully compatible with the host.

JG Carr prepares the stone, processes it, makes sure it fits with its new environment, fixes it in place, and then can apply finishes if the stone allows. We can finish the replacement stone in order to completely blend in with the surrounding masonry in both colour and texture.
The strength of the finishing coat applied depends entirely on how brittle the chosen material is. To find out how we can help your own domestic or commercial property, get in touch.
